Environmental Book Challenge

The environmental book challenge has taught me a lot about the environment and has pushed me to read books that I wouldn’t normally read. I have read CHOMP, Flush, Hoot, My Side of the Mountain, Julie of the Wolves, On the Far Side of the Mountain, Julie, Julie’s Wolf Pack, and last but not least, Stranded.

I have learned how much humans lack respect for nature and animals which can lead to a damaged environment and injured wildlife (CHOMP). In Flush and Hoot, I noticed that the author has had a theme to his books. He, Carl Hiaasen, wrote a lot about endangered and harmed animals and how to help them. I also learned just how unpredictable nature can be and that you always have to be prepared with food, water, shelter, and knowledge (My Side of the Mountain). Also in On the Far Side of the Mountain, I learned why poaching is so cruel and despicable, and how many animals die just so humans can make money.

In Julie of the Wolves, Julie, and Julie’s Wolf Pack, I learned about perseverance, having to adapt to your surroundings, how humans can be at peace with nature, and how wolves are not as dangerous as most humans might see them. The wolves, in my opinion, can give great comfort. After reading Stranded, I learned how animals can die easily because of humans’ litter and trash. Humans can have a very special connection with animals, and we can help them in many different ways.

Overall, my favorite book was Stranded because it really touched me and I learned a lot from it. My favorite part of Stranded was when Koby showed her class how she wasn’t as different as they thought when she swam with whales. Then the veterinarian talked about how cool Koby was. Thanks to Tracy, the vet, Koby started making friends at school and learned not to be as embarrassed about her loss of a foot.

Some ways I believe that I can help the environment and the wildlife in it are: picking up litter when I see it, recycling plastic, glass, and other recyclables, being kind to animals (like if I see a spider I could put it in a cup and bring it outside instead of squishing it), raising money for animal shelters and environmental protection, and most importantly, telling people what I have learned. I love to read, like to learn, and really enjoyed this book challenge.
