True Colors

Prologue

Micky felt a sharp pain shooting through her wrist as she spiked her last volleyball. When she fell to the ground, she blacked out.

California 2002

6:00am

“Cassy, time to go! Hustle up!” Cassandra’s mom yelled.

“I’m coming!” Cassy yelled back. Cassandra was moving from her beautiful, luxurious home in Studio City, California, to downtown New Jersey. She was not excited about leaving her school, Harvard-Westlake private school, friends, and varsity volleyball team. She took one last look around her room, then headed downstairs. She couldn’t explain to herself that this was for the best. Ever since her dad passed away, she knew that she would have to start again in a new city. But she never thought that it would be in another state, and so soon too! Cassy grabbed her bags and headed into her car. As she drove to the airport, she blasted the radio on. When she got there, Cassy snatched her bags out of the trunk of her Chrysler. She quietly hummed to herself as she waited in the long lines to board the plane. When Cassy finally got onto the plane and in her spot, she fell fast asleep.

On the plane

7:00am

The snake opened its mouth, hissing, about to swallow Cassy whole and… hissssssshissssssssssshissssssssss bump. Cassandra's eyes slowly opened sleepily.

“We are now arriving in Pittstown, New Jersey.”

The pilot announced, “Please exit the plane carefully and get your butts outta here! Just kidding! Please give Delta Airlines 5 stars online. Have a lovely day!”

3 weeks later

Cassy entered her new high school when a group of girls came up to her. They were all blondes, just like her!

“Ohh, ohhh. New girl coming in hot.” “She seems like our type!” “Yah, and I think she should join us.” “Ummm… excuse me, but who are you?” Cassandra politely questioned. They certainly did not have proper etiquette.

The girls looked at each other. “The populars, duh.” They all said in perfect unison. “Are you going to try out for varsity volleyball?” One of the girls asked. “I… I guess so. I’m Cassandra. I was the captain at…” One of the girls cut Cassy short, “ Whatever. Oh, and from now on we call you Cee. Anyways I hope you come!” Didn’t Cassy just say that she’d come? One girl caught Cee’s eye though, she was a brunette and had a sweatshirt and baggy-ish pants on.

The girl was walking behind the populars, raised her eyebrows, rolled her eyes, and kept walking. “Who’s that?” Cee asked. “Oh. That’s just Micky.” The populars all exchanged glances and walked away.

The next week

Cassandra couldn’t wait for tryouts. She doodled in her notebook when she was supposed to take notes. She accidentally tried to eat her banana with the peel still on. Finally, tryouts came. Cassandra “Cee” sprinted to the gym and started warming up. At her old school, she was the captain of the varsity volleyball team. That was before her dad died. She saw the girl, Micky?, enter the gym. Micky started walking directly toward Cassy and, whoosh grabbed a ball from the bin behind her. Twenty minutes later, tryouts began. There were a lot of girls there, but Cassy knew from the start that Micky, by far, was the best. Too bad that they both wanted...BOOM! Someone cried out in pain behind her and smacked the floor. Cee spun around. Micky! Cassandra dialed 911 and tried to help Micky stand up, but she couldn’t. Micky had blacked out.

Micky

At the hospital

“Where… where am I?” Micky asked. Micky’s dad was sitting next to her. She felt woozy. “You’re in the hospital. You hurt your wrist. Broke it actually. I need to tell the doctor that you’re awake.” Micky’s dad hurriedly exited the room. The hospital room was absolutely bland, revolting, and had no decorations. No wonder people were always sad! Someone slowly and quietly entered the room. Micky sat up on the bed. Was that Cassy? “I gave up my spot on the varsity team for you. You know, I was jealous of you ever since the first day of school. You have a wonderful dad and grandma who takes care of you. I have neither. Everyone secretly wishes to be like you. Including me.”

Mickey started crying. Is this really how the prettiest and most popular girl in the school thinks of her? “I was jealous of you. Kind, perfect, pretty, loving. All of your clothes are lavishly decorated with jewels and glitter. I wanted to be like you.” Micky said in tears.

“You will always be my one true friend.”
